DIAMOND PLANET | 55 cancri e
55 cancri e
55 Cancri e (abbreviated 55 Cancri e), known as Janssen is an exoplanet in the orbit of its sun-like host star 55 cancri e. The mass of this planet is about 8.63 Earth masses and its diameter is about twice that of the Earth, It takes less than 18 hours to complete an orbit and is the innermost-known planet in its planetary system. 55 Cancri e was discovered on 30 August 2004. However, until the 2010 observations and recalculations, this planet had been thought to take about 2.8 days to orbit the star. In October 2012, it was announced that 55 Cancri e could be a carbon planet.
Is 55 Cancri e made of diamond?
Surface temperature of this planet is nearly 4,900 degrees Fahrenheit (2,700 degrees Celsius). For a while it was dubbed the "diamond planet" because scientists suggested that it was composed of diamonds and graphite.
Is there any possibility of life on 55 Cancri e ?
The intense heat from the host star would be far too great to support life, however, and could not maintain liquid water. Hu developed a method of studying exoplanet atmospheres and surfaces, and had previously only applied it to sizzling, giant gaseous planets called hot Jupiter.
